What is Premature Rupture of the Membranes?

Premature rupture of the membranes or PROM is a situation where mom's membranes or the sack which is holding the baby in the uterus ruptures before it's time for the baby to be delivered. This can be caused by a number of factors.  Once that amniotic sack is ruptured,  there is a greater risk of infection because the baby is no longer in a sealed environment.

PROM should be recognized quickly so that the doctors can take the necessary steps either by giving Mom antibiotics  or taking other measures to try and prevent infection from developing.
