What is Neonatal Head Cooling?

Neonatal Head Cooling is a very recent technique where doctors cool the baby’s head after a traumatic or difficult  delivery.  The head cooling slows down the swelling process in the brain which is often a cause of injuries in babies who had a  traumatic labor and delivery. Head cooling is done immediately after delivery if the doctors believe that there were problems with the oxygenation of the baby during labor and delivery.

Head cooling has been shown to reduce the amount of damage caused by oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery.
