Cord Blood Gas or Cord PH is a lab test which is done at the time of delivery. A nurse will take a small sample of blood from the umbilical cord and have the lab run a PH test on it. Normal PH is usually around 7.25.
If the Cord Blood sample has a PH lever much lower than normal, it can indicate there was a problem with oxygenation during labor and delivery. Another value which is measured is the Base Excess. If this number is above 12, it too can indicate a problem with oxygenation of the baby during labor and delivery.
