What is Prolonged Labor

Prolonged labor refers to the amount of time it takes from when mom becomes complete and pushing until when the baby is delivered. Prolonged labor can be caused by an arrest of descent,  meaning the baby does not descend through the pelvis and the birth canal within the time parameters the doctors have established. If there is an arrest of descent during the pushing stage doctors will often suggest a cesarean section delivery.  In many cases this is a safer option for the baby because if there has been an arrest of descent, it’s the body’s way of  telling the doctor and those caring for mom that there is something preventing the baby from coming through the birth canal.
