Johnson & Johnson Is Hit With a $500 Million Verdict for its Defective Pinnacle Metal-on-Metal Hip implant Device

A jury in Dallas last week awarded over $500 million to five plaintiffs who sued Johnson & Johnson over a defective metal-on-metal hip. The trial last over two months and was the second bellwether trial in the Pinacle hip MDL, or multi district litigation. The jury ruled in favor of the Plaintiffs finding that the metal on metal hips caused:

  • Bone erosion
  • Inflammation of surrounding tissues
  • Metallosis

Under the MDL process,  a series of cases have been selected for trial.  These are known as bellwether cases.  The bellwether trials allow attorneys for both sides to see how the cases are viewed by jurors and often help in bringing about settlements of large groups of cases.
