GlaxoSmithKline marketed Zofran for off-label use by pregnant women for morning sickness which may cause serious birth defects such as heart, skeletal and kidney abnormalities, cleft lip, cleft palate and death.

Zofran is a drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.  It is effective at treating nausea and was approved by the FDA only for use in patients suffering from nausea from chemotherapy and after surgery.

Many women suffer nausea during pregnancy, often referred to as morning sickness.  However, Zofran was never approved by the FDA as a treatment for nausea in pregnant women.

The reason Zofran was not approved for use by pregnant women is because it can cause horrific birth defects including heart abnormalities, kidney malformation, bone malformation, hypospadias, cleft lip, cleft palate and death.

Though Zofran was not approved by the FDA for use by pregnant women, and despite the fact that it can cause life threatening birth defects, GlaxoSmithKline marketed the drug as a treatment for morning sickness.

GlaxoSmithKline did not warn doctors or their patients about the risks caused to an unborn baby if the mother uses Zofran during pregnancy.

There are currently several hundred lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline for injuries caused to babies by Zofran.  An MDL has been set up in Federal Court in Massachusetts.
